This historical romance is the third in a series set in Ireland in the 1950’s. It follows three daughters and their husbands, as well as their mothers and fathers, as they work to give a dilapidated mansion a second life as a bed and breakfast. Tribulations include old class resentments, a murder, a serious illness, and the very hard work of trying to run a large farm and appear rich while pinching every penny. The plot is well designed, but the emotional impact is diminished because much of the action doesn’t happen on the page. It is described by the omniscient third-person narrator who seems to hold the characters, and the reader, at arm’s length. Further, transitions are often rocky, as when one chapter ends with the announcement that the grandmother is seriously ill… and the following chapter picks up months later, as if to say her illness is not important to the characters or the plot, neither of which is true. The best writing occurred in the letters sent home by the grandmother to each of her daughters. Her voice is authentic and direct, and her words are driven by her deep insight into the character of each woman. I wish the whole book had been written in this voice. This is the third and, I believe, final book in the Robinswood series and what a special book it is. Jean Grainger continues the action and momentum from the first two books and tells of the hard times and grief her characters must face. I don't want to give away the story but readers should be ready for a good cry or two. As she does in all of her books, Jean creates characters who are so real that they virtually walk off of the page (or out of the Kindle as the case may be). She is truly a gifted author and I will read anything she writes.Another wonderful book that I was not able to put down!
